Thread: Desktop disappeared after system update

i run unr koala 9.10 on dell mini 10. after fiddling drivers made run (i needed poulsbo drivers screen resolution right , had play alsamixer microphone , audio working) - although confess beginner in linux world, copy-paste stuff find on fora , linux troubleshooting websites.
anyway, koala running smoothly until yesterday (i think) when downloaded updates suggested update manager (some of them, poulsbo listed not authorized or sth this, although have no clue if relevant problem) , ever since, when start machine, don't see desktop. is, can see wallpaper , top panel, can't see icons let me run applications. ubuntu sign in top left corner inactive. plus sound gone (although worked before).
screen resolution fine , system seems ok, except lack of interface allow me use it...
appreciate , please remember i'm newbie. thanks!

something drop down terminal typing ctrl-alt-f1. login if necessary.

then, remove gnome settings so:

code:
rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf
after that, restart in normal boot mode , see if working better. when delete directories using above command, ubuntu automatically generates default settings you. if gnome settings problem(which first instinct), fix it.
