Having trouble creating new Style preset in CS2

hey-

i trying create new style button design made, having trouble. searched photoshop 'help' website, , found few answers, appears @ issue 'new style' icon on styles pallet not illuminated, , therefore not responding when clicked.....

i use cs2 on macbook pro.

if open new blank file, make new layer , double click on (in layers palette) bring layer style window new style... available there?

i'm trying figure out steps using try , make new style.
