Proximity Switch to 3.5mm jack for output to iOS device.

hi folks,

long time watcher, first time user  :)
anyway i'm looking kickstart project , think might right place started...  want take proximity switch , have read ios device via 3.5mm jack.  thought can use arduino board, connect sensor , 3.5mm jack , have arduino pass signal.

am right?  nutz?  arduino components need consider?  programing?

any pointing me in right direction appreciated!
