Thread: Help Me Dump Windoze
this first post , hopefuly not last. longtime computer user. have suffered ms path beginning, dos 1.0. use win xp pro. have abandoned ms apps on last couple of years , ms left on computers operating system. migrate linux , ubuntu appears least painful way go.
year or ago installed whatever current version of ubuntu on partition , mucked around week or so. removed because printer , scanner not supported. gave 9.1 version try , found supported printer, partially. looks it's time make move , if have replace older scanner or printer, beit. after installing on partition tweezed fro couple of days couldn't performance desired apps use. gimp pokey @ editing graphics , audacity choppy editing sound files. once again shelved idea.
looking assistance others have similar requirements. below list current hardware , primary useage. expect achieve same, or better, performance have in xp. rather not upgrade hardware @ least 5 years old not entirely out of question.
hardware: asus p4b mb 2.4, ghz intel p4, 1 g ram, 80 g ide hd x2, canon i850 color printer, ati 9550 video card, sb pci 512 sound card.
applications: firefox, thunderbird, exact audio extractor, cool edit pro, nero, paint shop pro, open office.
main uses are: web surfing, ripping cds , lps flac files, editing wav , flac files, scanning photos 300 ppi jpegs editing , printing, printing cd labels.
past issues ubuntu: gimp looked great editor bogged down on simple editing of jpegs of useful resolution , size. audacity sound editor displayed choppy while previewing sound files , had lot of latency when cutting , pasting.
if can give me direction on start version , way proceed can of windoze train appreciate it.
