Powering a raspberry pi from another raspberry pi through gpio over a relatively long distance - Raspberry Pi Forums


i've got rudamentary range extender system set using 2 raspberry pi 3s , ethernet cable. 1 of pi's in hallway clear signal original wifi network, , ethernet cable runs along wall living room signal weak second pi broadcasting new wifi network. here's question starts - i've got both boards running off of 1 power cable, have wires running 5v , ground gpio pins taped along ethernet cable , connect 5v , ground of other pi (yes know isn't ideal, it's calculated risk). problem is, while worked fine in close range tests, appears enough current being lost through longer power line second pi not receive enough (red light on network not being used, there starts bit of load light goes off). i've thought of couple solutions want make sure i'm not frying pi.

1 - pi 3 has 2 5v pins, run second power line increase current carrying capacity? question here using second 5v pin result in 10v connection or double wire connecting 2 5v rails? if doubles wire have use second ground wire?

2 - 3.3v pins? know 3.3v rail used power things lan, if ran 3.3 3.3 bridge 2 3.3v rails resulting in more power networking (as recall red light goes off when wifi being used intensively) or result in effective 8.3 volts , fry board? if work, option 1, need second ground wire?

3 (probably dangerous) - 1 screams nope @ me worth mentioning - i've got 2 power adapters both insufficient power pi. if connected 1 each in addition gpio powerline, bridging 2 5v result in sufficient power or overload pi's?

using both pins not going supply 10v, 5v. there no benefit, nor harm using both.

not connect 3.3v pin 5v pin. won't 8.3v, you'll 5v on 3v3 line, destroying parts of pi

no. possible, need specialised load balancing devices.
better off buying single high quality power supply (not mobile phone charger) quality usb cables of @ least 24awg


tl;dr
don't mess power lines unless study more how dc electricity works.
not recommend powering second pi off should possible if have no need high power. polyfuse on pi3b rated 2.6a not try power second pi3b another.
maybe 0 or 0w, not more few cm away due voltage drop.
