Suggestions on battery powered soil moisture sensor with LED feedback


greetings,

i have created soil moisture monitor prototype using standard arduino, powered 5v usb charger, rgb led indicating moisture content!  might simple, first arduino project, , i'm excited it. 

i take project next level, , make battery powered.  use advice guide me on creating works well, , has decent battery life.

here things i've been thinking about:
  • i want use pro mini project because of small footprint , because have 1 on hand
  • i want use type of led provide alert plant needs watered.  realize solid led not ideal, , drain battery quickly.  thinking maybe using rgb led blink different colors.  have blink 5 times once minute provide feedback plant keeper.
  • i want battery powered.  know 9v batteries not recommended, thinking using 4xaa batteries, on/off switch
  • in order prolong sensor life, , increase battery life, use 1 of digital pins turn soil moisture sensor on/off before/after reading sensor every 30 minutes.
  • i've been reading sleepy library way put arduino in hibernation when not doing anything.  plan use way converse battery life.


do have feedback on things have mentioned far? 

is there have not mentioned think should aware of? 

do think ideal of using 1 rgb led idea, or better off using 3 individual different color leds , lighting 1 @ time depending on reading?

hello, seem on right track. key battery usage efficient hardware , efficient software. have plan both. use absolute maximum sleep mode (power down). also, have discovered versions of pro mini have solder bridge designed removed if providing more efficient source of power. (the 1 have adafruit , solder blob between crystal , capacitor on ftdi end of board.) once solder blob removed, inefficient power circuit , power on led out of circuit. can either attach correct voltage directly battery source, or use more efficient power supply. prefer oki78sr. comes in 2 versions depending on wether using 5v or 3.3v on arduino.

one last thought. arduino runs @ 16mhz uses less energy if run, example @ 8mhz. power saving option didn't mention in post.
