Thread: Proxy server issue causing inability to install software

as still consider myself beginner ubuntu, thought may having basic problems setting proxy server, after posting same problem in beginners forum (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1323761), had no luck.

every time try install something, either synaptic, software centre or terminal, wants go through proxy server have use on university campus (which no longer on), despite me setting of proxy settings connect directly internet. i've set proxy settings in synaptic package manager, preferences/network proxy , firefox, i've looked in .bashrc didn't have anything. i'm running ubuntu 9.10 on toshiba equium p200.

firefox works, of internet based apps work, can't install anything, still convinced wants go through proxy server despite me being unable find settings change anywhere. missing elementary, or there problem here?

i've run before. you'll need press alt+f2 , type "gconf-editor" (no quotes). need select system->http-proxy in left-hand pane, , clear checkbox "use_http_proxy" , content of "host". you'll prompted authentication first time this. finally, stop happening again, in normal proxy configuration box create new location no proxy set, , 1 uni proxy. "default" setting is, annoyingly, inadequate resetting proxy settings. anyway, can switch appropriate location , "apply system-wide" @ time.
