Thread: Strange Problem: Lost my GUI?

update: "fsck" command seemed solve problem, although everytime think fixed comes up, odd power fluctuation on motherboard or something.

have strange problem , attempt concise , make sense thread:

couple months ago had strange issue grub which posted about. due dual boot (xp/ubuntu on seperate disks) xp disk showing signs of eminent failure , therefore causing weird grub errors. started working again though there no problem after backed moving important files ubuntu drive incase xp drive failed.

fast forward last night, had work in room pc located, unhooked , placed in room. when finished booted , got same behavior motherboard screen sticking , getting grub errors, figured here go again.

after restarting on , on knowing load grub list, boot xp , disk checker starts "deleting index entry" , "usn journal verification" messages. ok fine, i've seen before. xp , use normal when sudden bs of death memory problem. after rebooting put in password , desktop different , files gone! though did complete reinstall wasn't case since space on hd hadn't changed, files somewhere...

couldn't find files thought, "ok xp drive going fail, no problem i'll quit using in favor of ubuntu." go ubuntu, open xp drive find files can copy new added since last periodic backup. , ended finding files in weird "found.001" folder @ root. copied on ubuntu drive.

after fiddling around listening music, organizing moved files etc, when decided use amarok instead of default player. amarok gave me kde error (i use gnome). had force quit amarok though song kept playing until finished. gui started acting weird. tried shut down pc when "system shut down in x seconds" couldn't see message or buttons waited until countdown over, when said amarok still open , force quit it, pc shuts down...

after selecting ubuntu weirdness begins. tried handwrite of errors after filesystem check:

"could not update iceauthority file /var/lib/gdm/.iceauthority"

"there problem configuration server. (/usr./lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited status 256)"

"install problem!" (this in corner pop-up box after restart login gui blue , white odd since using brown/orange, couldn't write entire message fast enough before poofed)

"mount of file system failed.
maintenance shell started.
control-d terminate shell , retry."

"fsck.ext: error while loading shared library: /lib/libc2p.so.2: cannot read file data: input/ouput error"
at point strange errors have part stopped , left either login screen in gui form, can select name, type password , click enter. or looks terminal , type in username , type password. both result in having terminal screen prompt root@myname-desktop:~#

other information may make sense of few days ago after update manager ran, there bunch of updates kde in name, though again use gnome, suspect wrong gui? because it's booted , can whatever, no gui. everytime reboot goes through filesystem check process.

hope makes kind of sense.

well first, bad drive in windows odd reason contagious, explanation know is windows.
second, think getting filesystem error when filesystem check runs. being dropped (root) shell give opportunity fix problem. point can try typing "exit" , computer may boot normally, wnat try fix file system first. try catch error, , google fix.
