Selection of presence sensor

hi guys.

for 1 of university projects need detect presence of person in shower. in order have in mind use proximity sensor. if target in distance range (let's 20 50 cm) assume person in shower when distance measure no longer in range mean person left shower. need detect time of person in shower (meaning when he/she gets in , out). have read lot of info , forums choose type of sensor. still don't have clear answer. ultrasonic proximity sensors know cheap , more accurate can affected temperature, humidity , ambient noise, of them happen in shower. other option infrared 1 gets affected lightning conditions , surface of target. last option checked pir sensor know senses temperature of target, don't know if affected running hot water , more expensive. in general, don't know how running hot water affect detection of person in shower. also,so again don't know how work. sorry huge amount of  questions, little bit confuse factors have in mind. hoping out there can lost newbie me , give me suggestion. lot :)

the pir sensor detects changes in ir pattern. hc-sr501 less $2.
a better install may ceiling mount, this

First use of Arduino Uno : avrdude error on Blink uploading

hi all, i bought arduino (or should genuino) starter kit. first test , failing. i have follow religiously first pages , when trying upload blink sketch, uploading fails avrdude error : avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer not responding. as suggested in other posts, have tried 1) switch latest hourly build of arduino ide 2) switch previous stable version of arduino ide (1.6.09) 3) change usb cable 1 know working fine 4) make same steps on computer (unfortunatelly, of them macos running on macos 10.11.6, not interesting test) 5) press reset before upload, interesting thing : tx led never flashes the full log attached. idea of why happening ? to save people having download log, it's sync error, resp=0x00 every time: code: [select] avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer not responding avrdude: stk500_getsync() attempt 1 of 10: not in sync: resp=0x00 avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer not responding and he's running 1.6.11 hourly avrdude 6.0.1. ...
