Corrupted Preferences File - Why?
trash prefs! know mantra. when ps fails something, trash prefs!
i wondered why/how ones preferences ever corrupted. ive use ps, since 2.5 on sorts of pcs, running around clock days. never once had encountered corrupted preferences file until now, is.
what encountered can listed observation. im sure 1 possible cause. still, thought id share experience.
up @ 4:00am start rush scan job. boots fine, , start ps cs2. loading plug-ins, etc., notice sun microsystems java wants update , icon has appeared in tasktray of xp-pro sp3. open it, , click update later, or whatever exact dialog is. drops tasktray. ps seems taking long time load on workstation, give few moments. nothing. hung @ reading text global resources. check task manager ps shown not responding. odd, has never happened before in years. not once.
i remembered there update extend script, told ps hold off on. go updates, via bridge , still there waiting. end task ps , usable ms. of course theres nothing. event viewer shows application hang, no useful info. install extend script update, , try ps again. gets same spot , hangs.
ok, allow java update (making sure not allow installation of msn search toolbar - sheezh! try ps yet again. hang @ same spot.
re-boot , hang. though have said thousand times, trash prefs, takes moment sink in. trash prefs , ps. luckily, had dual-monitor workspace saved, , takes minute change default preferences want.
normally, have everything, , mean everything, set not auto-update. turn feature off every program install. use premiere lot, , not want norton, or anybody, waking , phoning home. ill tell em when update. well, missed java.
i can guess did update thing, @ critical time pss loading , blew prefs file. had popped second later, or maybe second earlier, doubt id have had trash prefs. after these years (decades really), had corrupt preferences file.
im sure there myriad things can corrupt preferences file, , guessing @ caused mine. however, timing perfect, java gets blame.
